Unfortunately, the United Kingdom (UK) does not currently have a national ID card system. The UK previously had plans to introduce a national ID card, but the project was abandoned in 2010.
Prior to the cancellation of the national ID card program, some key features that were proposed for the UK ID card included:
Physical Appearance
- Credit card-sized plastic card
- Contain the bearer’s photograph, name, date of birth, and other personal details
- Possibly include the coat of arms or other national symbols of the United Kingdom
Functionality
- Serve as an official proof of identity and citizenship for UK residents
- Allow UK citizens to travel freely within the European Union without a passport
- Potentially be used for identification purposes, such as accessing government services or opening a bank account, within the UK
Security Features
- Incorporate advanced security measures to prevent forgery, such as:
- Embedded electronic chip with biometric data (e.g., fingerprint or iris scan)
- Laser-engraved personal information
- Ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) security elements
Eligibility and Application
- Likely be available to all UK citizens, including both adults and children
- Application process would have involved submitting biometric data, proof of identity, and payment of the application fee
- Cards would have been issued within a specified time frame after a successful application
However, the national ID card program in the UK was ultimately canceled due to concerns over privacy, civil liberties, and the cost of implementation. As a result, the UK currently does not have a mandatory national ID card system in place.
